HP 218 error messages: what they mean
The most common toner messages on the 3201dw and MFP 3301, with what they mean and your first steps. The exact wording varies by firmware version.
Content updated:
Toner messages fall into three groups: seating (the cartridge is not in properly), chip (memory not readable, or not recognized as HP) and level (low or very low). Below are the common ones; the exact text differs somewhat per firmware version, so write down what your printer says before you dismiss it.
| Message (type) | Meaning | First steps |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge missing / install the [color] cartridge | The printer sees no (valid) cartridge in that slot. | Reseat the cartridge, check that all packing material is off, wipe the chip contacts, restart. |
| Incompatible, unsupported, used or counterfeit cartridge | The chip is not read as a new HP chip (dynamic security). | Original: clean the contacts, try another cartridge. Compatible or remanufactured: often normal — acknowledge it, or ask the seller for an updated chip. |
| Cartridge problem / cannot read the cartridge | The printer cannot read the memory on the cartridge chip. | Take the cartridge out, wipe the chip contacts, reseat firmly, restart. If it keeps returning with an original, the cartridge may be defective. |
| Toner low / very low | HP's level estimates "for planning purposes only". | No need to replace yet; have a spare ready and replace when print quality becomes unacceptable. Rocking the cartridge can spread remaining toner. |
| Wrong slot / color mismatch | A cartridge sits in another color's slot. | Put each cartridge in the slot whose color chip matches. |
| Printer error / turn off and on (with a code) | A general hardware or firmware error, not always toner-related. | Restart fully. If the code keeps returning, write it down and look it up with HP support for your model. |
When it is not a toner problem
Codes about paper jams, the fuser or the scanner/document feeder are not toner problems. If such a code keeps returning, write it down in full and look it up on HP Support with your printer model.
Chip problem or toner problem?
A chip problem shows as a message around installation, usually without poor print quality. A toner problem shows on paper (streaks, fading, a missing color) with no chip message. Test with a known-good cartridge to tell them apart. See also faded print and streaks.
Frequently asked questions about HP 218 error messages
Why is my toner not recognized?
Start with the physical checks: remove the cartridge, make sure all packing tape and the protective cover are off, and reseat it firmly in the slot whose color chip matches the cartridge. A dirty or damaged chip contact can also cause it.
If it is a compatible or remanufactured cartridge that stopped being accepted after an update, the likely cause is dynamic security — contact the seller for a replacement or refund. An Original HP cartridge that is still rejected needs HP support.
What do "toner low" and "toner very low" mean?
They are estimates from the cartridge chip. HP calls the levels "estimates for planning purposes only" and says you do not need to replace a cartridge until print quality becomes unacceptable — "low" is a reminder to have a replacement ready. Gently rocking a cartridge near the end can redistribute the toner for a while.
Remanufactured cartridges that reuse a reset HP chip may not show toner-low messages at all (Staples says so for its 218X).
The toner level is wrong or shows "unknown".
Levels come from the cartridge chip, so a remanufactured cartridge with a reset or reused chip, or a compatible chip, may report nothing or something inaccurate. With an Original HP cartridge, reseat it, then update the display by restarting the printer. If the level stays wrong, print by quality: replace when output fades.
How do I tell a chip problem from a toner problem?
A chip problem shows up as a message before or right after installing: "not recognized", "unsupported", "used or counterfeit" or a cartridge problem — often while the print itself looks fine. A toner problem shows on paper: streaks, faded areas, a missing color — with no chip message.
Test it: install a cartridge you know is good (preferably Original HP). If the message disappears, the previous cartridge's chip was the problem. If print quality stays poor with a known-good cartridge, work through HP's print-quality steps (cleaning page, paper, settings) — the problem may be in the printer.
Do compatible or remanufactured cartridges work in an HP 218 printer?
Often, but with a real risk. HP labels the 3201dw and 3301 models "dynamic security enabled": HP says such printers are intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips, and that firmware updates can block other cartridges — including ones that work today.
Remanufactured cartridges that reuse an HP chip (Staples, Clover) and compatibles with their own chip (Swift Ink, True Color Toner, INKFUN) are sold for these printers. We have not tested any of them; we report what each seller states and what its return policy is.
What does the chip on a toner cartridge do?
The chip tells the printer which cartridge is installed and tracks the toner level. On dynamic-security printers it is also what the printer checks before it accepts the cartridge.
For compatibles we show four chip states from the listing: chip included; no chip; move your old HP chip over; chip not stated. Only "chip included" counts as ready to install, and none of them guarantees the cartridge survives a later HP firmware update.

Dynamic security printers are intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips or circuitry; firmware updates can block cartridges with non-HP chips, "including cartridges that work today". Instant Ink and HP ePrint require automatic firmware updates. Using a non-HP cartridge does not void the HP Limited Warranty, but damage caused by it is not covered.
