Remanufactured and compatible are both non-HP supplies, but they are made differently. A compatible ("new-build") cartridge is manufactured new by a third party with its own chip. A remanufactured cartridge starts as an empty Original HP cartridge: it is collected, cleaned, inspected, worn parts are replaced, it is refilled with toner and its chip is reset or reused. In the U.S., office-supply chains sell their own remanufactured lines for HP 218X.

Why the chip matters more than the toner

HP says its dynamic-security printers — which HP names for the 3201dw, MFP 3301sdw and 3301fdw — are intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips or circuitry, and that firmware updates can block cartridges with non-HP chips. A remanufactured cartridge that keeps the original HP chip (Staples says its chip is a "recycled HP chip that has been securely reset"; the Clover listing says "Reused OEM Chip") therefore follows a different route from a new-build compatible with an emulated chip.

  • Expect a notice. Staples says the printer may report a "reused" or "non-HP" cartridge. Acknowledge it and continue.
  • No low-toner warning. Staples says its reset chip does not support toner-low messaging — keep a spare.
  • No guarantee against updates. A reused chip is not a promise that every future firmware version accepts the cartridge.
  • "Chip not stated". The Quill listing does not mention a chip, so we do not treat it as ready to install.

Quality and yield: what to expect

  • Black text: with a well-remanufactured cartridge, usually hard to tell from original.
  • Color and heavy coverage: differences show first here — density and evenness vary by batch.
  • Yield: Staples and Quill state HP's own numbers (3,200 black, 2,500 per color for 218X). That is still the seller's claim; Clover states no number, only that it "meets or exceeds" HP.

Warranty

HP says using a non-HP cartridge does not void the HP Limited Warranty, but any printer damage caused by that cartridge is not covered. The cartridge's own guarantee comes from the seller — Staples states a 100% performance guarantee, Quill a 2-year guarantee against defects. Keep your receipt.

What is the difference between remanufactured and compatible toner?

A remanufactured cartridge is a used Original HP cartridge that has been cleaned, refilled and re-chipped or reset — Staples and Quill sell their own. Staples says its remanufactured 218X reuses a reset HP chip, does not support toner-low messages and may make the printer report a "reused" or "non-HP" cartridge.

A compatible ("new-build") cartridge is made new by a third party with its own chip. Both are non-HP supplies for warranty purposes; the reused-HP-chip route is the one HP itself says dynamic security does not target.

Does compatible toner void my HP printer warranty?

No — HP says using a non-HP cartridge does not void the HP Limited Warranty or an HP support contract. However, HP also says any printer failure or damage caused by a non-HP cartridge is not covered.

Separately, check the cartridge's own guarantee: Swift Ink states 24 months, Quill states a 2-year defect guarantee for its brand, Staples a 100% performance guarantee, and marketplace listings follow the seller's return window.

Do compatible or remanufactured cartridges work in an HP 218 printer?

Often, but with a real risk. HP labels the 3201dw and 3301 models "dynamic security enabled": HP says such printers are intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips, and that firmware updates can block other cartridges — including ones that work today.

Remanufactured cartridges that reuse an HP chip (Staples, Clover) and compatibles with their own chip (Swift Ink, True Color Toner, INKFUN) are sold for these printers. We have not tested any of them; we report what each seller states and what its return policy is.

What does the chip on a toner cartridge do?

The chip tells the printer which cartridge is installed and tracks the toner level. On dynamic-security printers it is also what the printer checks before it accepts the cartridge.

For compatibles we show four chip states from the listing: chip included; no chip; move your old HP chip over; chip not stated. Only "chip included" counts as ready to install, and none of them guarantees the cartridge survives a later HP firmware update.

What does "dynamic security" mean on an HP 218 printer?

It is HP's name for printers that check the chip or circuitry of each cartridge. HP's U.S. support document says dynamic-security printers are intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips or circuitry, and that firmware updates can block cartridges with non-HP chips — including ones that work today.

HP's U.S. product pages call the 3201dw, MFP 3301sdw and MFP 3301fdw "dynamic security enabled"; no HP page was found for the Costco 3301cdw. With Original HP 218 toner you will not notice it; it matters when you consider compatible or remanufactured cartridges.

Can a firmware update block my compatible toner?

Yes. HP states that firmware updates "can also block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP circuitry from working in the printer, including cartridges that work today." Most HP printers can be set to notify you before installing updates instead of updating automatically; HP notes that services like Instant Ink require automatic updates.

If you rely on compatibles, keep a spare Original HP black cartridge and buy from a seller with a clear return or replacement policy.
